Pictures of Old
Louisville in Autumn
This is a series of pictures taken in November 1998,
actually a bit past the peak of fall colors. There are two big problems in trying to
photograph Old Louisville. First are the multitudes of telephone poles and power
lines that are strung throughout the area and seem to be inconveniently placed in front of
some of the most picturesque buildings. We are assured that nothing will be done
about these, for the reasons of expense and apathy. The second problem is also
one of Old Louisville's greatest assets: its thousands of stately trees. Old
Louisville claims one of the largest collections of old growth timber in the region,
giving the area fine shaded avenues and an abundance of birds, squirrels, and even
raccoons! It's just a problem taking pictures that show long streetscapes during late
spring, summer, or early fall.
This collection of photographs is divided by streets and areas, and still
represent only a fraction of the district near its center: The thumbnail and image
pages are designed to load in under 20 seconds for most modem speeds. Click on one
