April-May
Kentucky Derby
Festival - although the Derby Festival is city-wide, Old
Louisville is conveniently located only minutes away by car from most
major events, and a case can be made that Old Louisville may be the
finest base of operations for out of town visitors. It is even
possible to walk to most major events, including the Derby itself,
from Old Louisville, if a 30-60 minute walk doesn't intimidate
you. It does eliminate parking hassles! The festival
includes 100s of events, most notably the Opening Ceremonies/Thunder
Over Louisville (good
picture) (April 17) which is expected to surpass
Thunder's previous spectacular world record displays with 51 tons of
fireworks and a half-mile rainbow of fire, Chow Wagons, The Great
Balloon Glow (April 23), The Great Balloon Race (April 24),
mini-Marathon (comes through Old Louisville April 24), The Great
Steamboat Race (April 28), the Pegasus Parade (April 29), the Kentucky
Oaks (April 30), and of course, the 125th Running of the Kentucky
Derby on May 1.
