Garden Tour a Sucess!

The "Hidden Treasures” Garden Tour, like its predecessors,
was a successful community effort that attracted a large number of
visitors to our historic neighborhood. The tour again teamed with the
Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in announcing the second annual Bard-B-Que
held at Landward House where food and music raised funds for free
Shakespeare in the Park, followed by a performance of
Julius Caesar.
Our thanks to go to all who made this year’s tour a success. Perhaps we
should start with Old Man Weather who, after playing a trick on us with
Saturday’s humidity, gave us a cleansing thunderstorm on Saturday night
that left us with garden-perfect weather for Sunday. Kudos and gratitude
to our garden hosts, who worked so hard and generously shared their
private retreats with us:
-
Alan L.
Shawler;
-
Cynthia B. Welch; Jeff Perry and
-
Gregg Keller; Leslie Bright & Peter
-
Salerno; George and Beckey Doyle;
-
Jim and Sharon Stone; Paul Porter
-
and Bill Clark; Joe and Linda
-
Plunkett; Louise Shawkat; Gayle and
-
Herb Warren, and Helga Vikre; and
-
Jeff, Drew and Susan Coleman Layman.
Many thanks go to the sponsors of the tour, without whose
support it could not be the unique and welcoming experience that draws
return visitors every year: Amici’s Italian Café; Architectural
Salvage; Bearwood Gardens/ Kevin Kouba; Blue Heron/ Aggie Gladwin; Old
Louisville Counseling Center; Bunton Seed Co.; Carly Rae’s; The
Conrad-Caldwell House Museum; Crosswind Farm/ Linda Ison; Digs; Don
Driskell/ Catalyst Realty & Property Management; DuPont Mansion Historic
Bed & Breakfast; Economy Aquatic Gardens, Preston Hwy.; E J Printing;
Ermin’s French Bakery & Café; The Gallery at 133 on W. Oak St.; The
Greater Louisville Bonsai Society; Gumby’s Specialty Catering; Ken
Herndon, Mulloy Properties; Hidden Hill/ Bob Hill; JW Solutions; Lady
Slippers Nursery; Anne Lyons; Mary Martin, Semonin Realtors; Masterson’s
Catering; Nord’s Bakery on Preston; Oak Street Hardware/ Lee Jones; Old
Louisville Chamber of Commerce; Old Louisville Coffee House; Old
Louisville Information Center; Panache Flowers and Gifts; Plant Kingdom;
Rhubarb Art; Scheler’s Food Mart; Deborah Stewart & Kate Cole, Rainey,
Jones & Shaw Realtors; Sweet Home Renovation Pros/ Tony Mapp; Dr. B.
Thomas Thacker; Dr. Jeremy Thornewill; Treyton Oak Towers; and The Wine
Market, Bardstown Rd.
The efforts of many Old Louisville residents and friends
from outside the Old Louisville community went into making it the success
that it was. Volunteers staffed the gardens, served as garden go-fers,
sold tickets and served in the hospitality center. For the sixth year,
Gayle and Herb Warren sponsored and hosted Art in the Garden at the DuPont
Mansion B & B where the annual Art in the Garden poster was inaugurated.
Gayle and Herb also hosted the winddown party open to all garden tour
volunteers, sponsors and garden hosts. The garden tour planning committee
extends its warmest thanks to all who participated in this community
effort!

Yard
Sale!
In need of attic treasures, cellar stuff, appliances, furniture,
bric-abrac, gifts, crafts, architectural details? Do you like to stroll
along magnificent avenues of Victorian mansions? Would you like to meet
your neighbors or just catch up? Would you like a great reason to visit
the magnificent setting of Old Louisville? If so, the first Saturday in
August is the day for you, mark
your calendar now! In Old Louisville we
never do anything small scale. The Third Street Association, the 1300
South Third Street Association, the Toonerville Trolley Association,
Second Street Association and the West St. Catherine Association will be
joined by other Old Louisville blocks and associations for this year’s
annual extravaganza on Saturday, August 2nd. This will be the largest
neighborhood yard sale of the year for the City of Louisville .
· 1000-1800 South Third Street (8 blocks)
· 1000-1800 South Second Street (8 blocks)
· 500-600 West St. Catherine Street (1 block)
· The blocks bordered by Floyd, Oak, First, and Hill
Streets. (9 square blocks)
· Check all around the neighborhood, especially St James
Court, for more yard sales taking advantage of the “official” sites above.
Bottom Line : If you only
go to one yard sale a year, THIS should be the one! In 2003 & 2004, there
were so many sales, just to do a quick walkaround took several hours. This
year will be larger than last. And in previous years there were some REAL
bargains to be had! What looks like junk and surplus to Old Louisville
residents are often the treasures of yard sales in other parts of town.
The sale is on a Saturday, school’s out and university’s
out, so parking should be easy to find everywhere.
Directions : Find I-65
and D o w n t o w n Louisville and take the St. Catherine St. Exit (just
south of downtown). You will already be at the northern limits of
the sale on Floyd, Burnett, First, Second Third or Fifth & St Catherine
Streets. Print a Yard Sale! copy of the
map (link above) and you should be ready to go. Again, be sure to check
along streets not mentioned as the official site for “extra” sales.
Warning: Old Louisville is big. To criss-cross the entire area by car
takes about an hour.

St James Court Art Show Gala
As you may know, in the past we have unveiled the St James
Art Show Poster during the week with little fanfare and low attendance. An
idea was presented to me that we should consider making this an event and
using it as an opportunity to make the neighborhood and our good residents
really shine. To that end, I am chairing an event that will be known as
the St James Art Show Gala that will benefit Kosair Charities and will
serve as the unveiling for this year’s poster.
On Saturday, September 27 at 7pm we will have the first
annual St James Art Show Gala to kick off the 2008 show. This will be a
black-tie event under a lighted tent on the green with a band, catered
food by 610 Magnolia and open bars. While we are working to have the
entire cost of the event underwritten by corporate sponsors, the sales of
tables will go 100% to Kosiar Charities.
This is a 100% tax
deductible cause and will promote our neighborhood as well as the Art
Show.
Tables of 8 are available for $1000 and individual tickets
are $125. This is
important for St James Court, The Art Show, Old Louisville as well as for
Kosair. We will unveil the poster for 2008. Recognize that artist and
present their award check AND we will give an award to someone in our
community who has done the most to promote art in Greater Louisville.
Inquiries and Ticket Purchases Contact: Jeff Perry,
Chairman at (502) 635-5333.
Councilman George Unseld has River Bats tickets
for August 6. Call 574-1106 to reserve. Each ticket includes free
admission, hot dog and soda.
