Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning story is brought to life in this stage adaptation by Christopher Sergel.

After four decades in print, countless awards and recognitions and a major motion picture, Latent Muse humbly brings this adaptation to life.  During the height of the Great Depression, Maycomb, Alabama is already an old, deep southern town.  We are introduced to the town in the middle of a high profile case where mild mannered Tom, a crippled black man, has been unjustly accused of an unspeakable crime punishable in those days by lynching.  Atticus Finch, a mild mannered mature father of two, struggles to maintain his commitment to truth while standing up against a tide of prejudice.  Atticus defends his client regardless of the opposition and teaches his children to stand up for what is right.   In the process, Atticus’ children Scout and Jem learn valuable lessons about white bigotry, black dignity and their father’s courage.

During four decades, the book has sold well over 14 million copies. It has become an American classic. Mockingbird gained even more notice after becoming a movie in 1962, and was turned into a stage play in 1987.

This Latent Muse production features Tim Kitchen as Atticus, Gracie Maddox as Scout, Tom Shirey as Jem, Robert Greene as Tom and Jayme Thomas as Mayella Ewell.

Lovers of Old Louisville,

Susan Coleman stopped by the Visitors Center this morning with money for her initial bunch of 16 tickets and picked up another bunch to sell.  She mentioned that she would like to challenge others to get out and sell the "Weekend Escape" tickets.
http://www.OldLouisvilleChamber.com/images/weekend_escape.jpg

We need everyone's help in getting these tickets sold. We hope that it will be a significant fund-raiser for providing support for the Visitors Center. Drawing will be held "live" on Sunday October 2nd, 5:00pm at the Fountain in St. James Court, during the Art Show.

If you don't tickets to sell, or just want to buy one for yourself, stop by the Visitors Center to pick some up. Individual tickets are also available for sale from the Information Center in Central Park.

I've just about sold my 16 tickets, and ready to get more... have you?
Alan

Third Street Neighborhood Assn. Members and friends:
Re: 1630 S. 2nd St. - Minerva Court Apartments
For anyone who has been bothered by Minerva Court Apartments' overflowing dumpsters, deteriorating siding, garbage filled parking lot, etc.

The owner of Minerva Court Apartments - 1630 S. 2nd St.
will be in court on October 6th, at 1PM (Courtroom #103 in the Hall of Justice at 6th and Jefferson Sts.) compliments of Inspections, Permits and Licenses.
We and Inspections, Permits and Licenses need community support in this effort.  The more of us that show up at the court proceedings, the better.  If you can possibly be there, be there and make yourself heard.  This owner has let his property go for years and keeps getting off with a pat on the back.  We need something done NOW!
Please come if you can.

Please don't forget St. Catherine Street's Neighborhood Yard sale being held this Saturday starting at 8AM.
Tell your friends !

They are raising money to fund the Victorian "period" lights on St. Catherine.  (See the upcoming article in the Courier Journal 9/9/05 (Fri)  by Sheryl Edelen  regarding the fund raisers they are doing.)

By the way, if you have not yet donated items for their yard sale, please call Rhonda Williams at 584-9231 to make arrangements or just bring them by Friday evening to her house at 622 W. St. Catherine St. (I'll bet you have a few things in your basement that you could donate.)

Please help the entire neighborhood by supporting their yard sale this Saturday !

Thanks!

From the West St Catherine Neighborhood Association:

***********************

Turn Out Your Attic, Turn On Our Lights

On Saturday, September 10, the West St. Catherine Neighborhood Association will be holding a series of yard sales in our neighborhood.  The proceeds will all go toward the renewal of period lighting on our street, and we need your help!  You can….

  1. Browse the sales, finding your own riches among the long-loved, slightly used items we will be selling at incredibly low prices….
  2. Donate some of your own items, because, as the saying goes, your trash may be someone else’s treasure, or…
  3. Simply make a cash contribution of your own: since the WSCNA is a 501 C-3 organization, it is tax deductible.
Join us, in any way possible, to make this event a success.

Literati: The literary intelligentsia

glitterati: Informal. Highly fashionable celebrities; the smart set.

litterati: Even more informal. A dedicated band of neighbors who pick up litter.

On West St. Catherine Street, we have our own "litterati": every Sunday afternoon, a group of three or four people gather and pick up all the litter that has accumulated on our street for the last week. It's an idea that has been working, and I encourage you to start a "litterati" of your own!

It wouldn't have to be the same people every week. Nor would they have to be that literary or that fashionalbe--just dedicated and reliable. All you would need to do is organize a party of three, four, or more people who would police the street once a week, looking for litter and the opportunity to pick it up. If each of our small neighborhood associations would form its own "litterati" group, think what a difference it would make in our beautiful district.

It works! It really does! Start your own group, and help clean up our historic neighborhood!

A brisk fall day is the perfect time to stroll the streets of Old Louisville. An overcast sky overhead and dead leaves underfoot - and just enough chill dampness in the air to make you pull your coat tighter around you…this is the best time to amble along the old streets and alleys, admiring the imposing Victorian architecture while the smell of apples and wood smoke spices the air. The boxwood hedges surrounding the mansions and townhouses still have their summer green, but most of the towering trees have lost their leaves and can only rattle bare branches to protest the gathering winds. If you’re lucky, you might pass one of the old gas lamps at just the right moment when dusk reluctantly surrenders the last of its daylight to night and hear the click and hiss of the lantern coming on in a feeble attempt to ward off the dark. This is the time that ghosts start to wander the streets of Old Louisville.
----David Domine, Ghosts of Old Louisville.

Old Reynolds Building to become loft condos

An old landmark building near Old Louisville appears to be saved.  Originally a Ford Motor Co. assembly plant, later owned by the Reynolds Aluminum Co.  Reynolds used the building to make aluminum airplane parts during World War II and later converted it to a national sales office.

InKY READING SERIES PRESENTS
ECLECTIC LINEUP OF LOCAL ARTISTS ON SEPT. 9

Media Contacts: Erin Keane - erin@inkyreadingseries.com  / 502-500-5835
Jason Cissell - jason@inkyreadingseries.com

LOUISVILLE, KY. (August 31, 2005) -- A novelist, a radio personality, a controversial graphic designer, and a singer/songwriter share the stage on Friday, September 9, at the InKY Reading Series, a free performance at The Rudyard Kipling, 422 West Oak Street. An open microphone session begins at 7 p.m., with the first featured performer taking the stage shortly afterward.

"The performances we're featuring this month really show off the diversity in Louisville's arts community," said InKY director Erin Keane. "We're especially excited to hear Kirby Gann read from his new novel, which takes place in a bar based on the Rudyard Kipling." In the novel, readers may find similarities between the Rudyard Kipling and Gann's Don Quixote, and the fictional bar's owners, Beau and Glenda Stiles, seem to resemble Rudyard Kipling owners Ken and Sheila Pyle.

The featured performers for September 9 are Kirby Gann, an editor at Sarabande Books, whose second novel, Our Napoleon in Rags, is set in a fictional neighborhood created in the image of Old Louisville; Michael Jackman, an essayist and familiar voice from Kentucky public radio; Scott Ritcher, a musician, former mayoral candidate, graphic designer, author of Letters to Saint Clinton, and the creator of the controversial image upon which it is based; and singer/songwriter Bryan Hurst, whose second solo album Beloved Infidel was released on the ear X-tacy label. All live in Louisville.

The InKY Reading Series (pron: inky), featuring quality poetry and live music, serves as a platform for emerging and established local and regional writers. For more information on the free monthly series, visit www.inkyreadingseries.com , e-mail erin@inkyreadingseries.com , or call 502/636-1311. The organizers welcome writing samples from those who would like to read at future events.
###
NOTE: Bios and photos of the featured performers are available at www.inkyreadingseries.com/press.htm , where info on future shows and stock photos of previous shows can also be found.
