The Louisville Jockey Club, early 1900s
"Grand Stand of Louisville Jockey Club, Louisville, Ky. "
Post Card Mailed in 1909

This view illustrates why Churchill Downs was originally known
officially as
the "Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association."
Besides races, the grounds were also meant as a place for carriages and picnics.
Here in the present-day infield is what appears to be a Victorian Tail-gate party.

Early on, you could find a number of events at the Downs, including auto
racing, balloon ascensions, air shows, concerts and steeplechases, as well
as one occasion when the state fair was held here, the main attraction being
the collision of two locomotives.
