Memorial Auditorium
4th & Kentucky
Memorial Auditorium opened in 1929, designed by
Thomas Hastings of New York and E. T. Hutchings
of Louisville. Combined with a plaza and park across 4th Street,
the structure was built to be a memorial for all who rendered
military or civilian service at any time. The building contains a
main concert hall with a magnificent Pilcher organ (recently restored),
and several smaller halls and meeting rooms.
Though it has always been known for its echoes and poor acoustics
(which eventually led to a lowering of its ceiling to little avail) it
has been and continues to be the scene of concerts and theatrical
performances.
