"Norton Infirmary,
Louisville, Ky"
Card mailed in 1918
The
John N. Norton Memorial Infirmary stood at the corner of Third and Oak
Streets since 1885/6. The house
that became the infirmary was purchased by John N Norton's wife in 1881 with
proceeds from the sale of her own home on Broadway, in his honor.
It was a protestant hospital, Louisville's first,
named for a well-loved local Episcopal priest and missionary, who died in 1881. Next to the hospital was a school of nursing,
Kentucky's first.
This
hospital was replaced with a newer building,
entrance facing Oak Street in the 1930s, where it stayed until it merged
with Children's Hospital (1969) and moved to it's present location in the
downtown hospital district (1973).
