James Breckinridge Speed , whose former home still stands at 
the corner of Garvin Place and Ormsby Avenue in Old Louisville, 
was one of Louisville's most prominent citizens until his death in 1912 
at age 68.  Besides being a philanthropist, he was a great collector of 
fine arts and sculpture, which well he could afford with his income 
from his many concerns, including a railway company, telephone company, cement company, cotton mills and several coal companies.  To honor his memory, his children established the Speed Scientific School at the University of Louisville in 1925, and his widow, Hattie Bishop Speed, 
the J. B. Speed Memorial Art Museum in 1927.

The museum remains the finest art museum in the region 
with a varied collection ranging from European masters to ethnic 
and modern works.
