Postcard Greetings
from Old Louisville

"Y.M.H.A. Louisville, Ky."
Postcard mailed in 1917
2nd & Jacob
The
Young Men's Hebrew Association moved into this 'new' building in 1915 after
it had outgrown its original (ca 1890) location near 1st &
Chestnut. The association was first organized by Isaac W. Bernheim
(noted local philanthropist of the time whose nearby residence on Third
Street still stands). The YMHA, later renamed, the Jewish Community
Center, stayed at this location, about a block from Temple Adath Israel,
until 1955, when it moved to its present suburban location. The
Jewish Community Center remains the third oldest continuously operating
center in the United States.
This
picturesque building was torn down for "urban
renewal."
